This trip is certain to exceed your expectations! After gathering in Sevilla in southern Spain we immediately depart in search of the endangered Iberian Lynx. Once considered to be on the brink of extinction, successful Conservation measures have seen the population of Iberian Lynx rebound.
During the tour, we will visit three outstanding wildlife locations, each offering different habitats and excellent wildlife opportunities.
Private Estate in Extremadura: Our safaris take place on a private estate of more than 8,500 hectares in the Río Matachel Valley. This is an excellent area for raptors, including Spanish Imperial Eagle, Bonelli's Eagle, Golden Eagle, Cinereous Vulture, and many others. The estate is also home to Red Deer, Mouflon, and Wild Boar, although the latter two are more elusive. Carnivores include Iberian Lynx, Eurasian Otter, Red Fox, and Egyptian Mongoose, but our main target throughout our stay will be the Iberian Lynx.
Arroyo de la Luz Wildlife Hides (Cáceres): Near Cáceres, we will visit the wildlife hides at Arroyo de la Luz for an evening photography session featuring Common Genet, Stone Marten, and European Badger.
Private Estate in the Montes de Toledo: Our final destination is a 5,000-hectare private estate in the Montes de Toledo, combining open farmland with rugged Mediterranean woodland. Mammals include Red Deer, Fallow Deer, Mouflon, Roe Deer, and Wild Boar. Red and Fallow Deer are commonly seen, while the others require a little more luck. The highlight here is the Iberian Lynx. Thanks to the open terrain and sparse vegetation, sightings are often closer than in many other areas, making this one of the best places in Spain to observe and photograph this iconic species.
We limit each group to just FOUR participants to ensure an intimate encounter and to reduce disturbance on the wildlife of this unique region. We search in four-wheel drive pick-up trucks that have been modified to have open viewing seats in the truck bed.
In keeping with the principles of responsible ecotourism:
We will make a donation to the conservation work benefitting the Iberian Lynx.
We will employ local people.
We will use locally owned and operated lodges and outfitters.
We will use local goods and services.
This is an ecotour that will make a difference to you and to the places we visit.
